Virulence Plasmids

IncFIBRecently, a novel virulence plasmid was sequenced in aSalmonella enterica serovar Kentucky isolate that showed homology to a virulence plasmid from an Avian Pathogenic E. coli (APEC) plasmid.  A recently collaborative study with researchers at U.S. FDA and the University of Minnesota indicates that acquisition of the plasmid may be responsible for the emergence of S. Kentucky at the predominant serovar isolated from chickens.  Currently, I am interested in identifying this plasmid in other serovars and examining its virulence potential for human disease.
